Asbestos is a mineral thats mined out of
the ground. Traditionally it came from South Africa and Canada. There are many, many different
types of asbestos. There are three primarily that are used commercially that are called
amosite, cryosite, and crysotile.
Those are types of asbestos fibers. All of them can
cause mesothelioma, and asbestos was generally used as an insulating material. It has a very
high resistance to heat. It is also added to a lot of building materials to give it
strength; its a very strong fiber.
Thats why it causes these diseases in people, because
when its inhaled, it doesnt break down. The body creates a response to it, which causes
the cancer. That same property is why it was used in building materials, so that products
wouldnt break, that they would be stronger like joint compounds or floor tiles. So those
are the types of applications that you find it in, where theres heat, friction, like
brakes, insulating materials, ceiling materials, steam related activity, or in building related
materials where that strength would be required..
